Yo Ho, Yo Ho!

Are you ready to pillage and plunder and rifle and loot? Perhaps extorting and pilfering is more your cup of tea? Either way, drink up me hearties... because it's International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Nearly every corner of the Disney canon is littered with savvy seafaring scallywags; from Captain Hook to the legendary Jack Sparrow, colorful characters have been hoisting the Jolly Roger for decades! My favorite manifestation of piracy in Disney, however, lies smack-dab in the middle of Adventureland at Walt Disney World. Naturally, I've spent my day in the most pirate-y way I know how: quoting the classic attraction and belting out "A Pirate's Life for Me" (which may or may not have warranted some looks of concern... I kid, I kid.). So go get your best eyepatch and a sturdy peg leg, and let's celebrate this day of nautical naughtiness with a voyage alongside some real buccaneers... but remember: dead men tell no tales!

Who is your favorite Disney pirate? I'm partial to the elegant Captain Hook and that bumbling first mate of his! I hope you've all had a great day of swashbuckling and silliness!

Snapshot Sunday: Castle Views

It's that time of week, princes and princesses!

Today's snap comes to you from a stormy August day in the Magic Kingdom (incidentally, the same one I wrote a post about a few weeks back). I absolutely love the walkways that run around either side of Cinderella Castle. On hot, sticky day in Walt Disney World's busiest park, these paths provide a welcome reprieve from the crazy crowds... and you can't beat the views!

That water...

I hope you all have a magical week!

My, What a Guy...

As I'm sure you're well aware, Gaston does a whole lot of things better than anyone else. You know, "No one's quick as Gaston, no one's slick as Gaston", and all that good stuff? LeFou, flattering fanboy that he is, gives us a pretty exhaustive laundry list of his hero's admirable qualities (guys- he's really good at projectile spitting).

Unfortunately (and this totally isn't LeFou's fault), the full extent of Gaston's exceptional abilities just can't fit into a mere minutes of jaunty song and dance, which has caused some of his less tune-worthy talents to fall to the wayside. It really is a shame that such a specimen's talents aren't being fully appreciated, so without further ado, I present the shining qualities that slipped LeFou's mind:

No one values a good education like Gaston.

via Tumblr

No one respects personal boundaries like Gaston.

via Tumblr

No one's self-esteem is at such a totally healthy level as Gaston's.

via Tumblr

No one else keeps his boots quite as tidy...

... or gives better group hugs to his fans!

No one gently strolls toward a romantic prospect like Gaston.

via Disney Screen caps

No one knocks politely before entering like Gaston.

No one effectively manages jealousy like Gaston.

However, LeFou certainly got one thing right...

... the man can decorate.

Podcast Party!

The online Disney community is a vast and awesome place- a magical playground where Disney enthusiasts of all kinds come together to revel in their collective passion. Brimming with blogs. forums, games, and more, you're all but guaranteed to find kindred spirits somewhere in that wonderland of the World Wide Web, whether you're a total animation geek or more suited to, say, the Avengers (get it? "Suit"-ed? Because they're superheros! ... I'll let myself out.).

Now, it's probably not too hard to guess which is my favorite nook of the online Disney-verse (hint: it starts with a "b", ends with a "-logosphere". Also, you're kind of in it right now), but there's another sector that holds a pretty piece of my Mickey-lovin' heart. It spans every corner of the kingdom, covering everything from parks to film to the cruise lines; in it, one can uncover hidden trivia or get updates on the very latest news from the Mouse House itself. Any guesses?

... okay, okay, I'll tell you! That slice of my heart belongs to nothing other than... (drumroll, please...) Disney podcasts! As previously stated (a whole three sentences ago), podcasts offer up both education and entertainment... "edu-tainment", if you will! (Hey- I never said I was good at this wordplay thing. Also, is it just me or is this post even heavier than usual on the snappy parenthetical asides?) They're perfect for long car rides, as a soundtrack to spice up mundane daily tasks, and I find them to be especially helpful when I'm trying to make it through a tough workout at the gym.

Disclaimer: If you do that last one, you will inevitably laugh out loud and make strangers uncomfortable. I mean, hypothetically...

With so many podcasts out there, it's no easy task to pluck a few favorites from the pool, but I've settled on three outstanding shows to share with you!

1) "Inside the Magic", www.insidethemagic.net

Inside the Magic, hosted by Orlando Attractions enthusiast Ricky Brigante, is a weekly show that is devoted to keeping listeners up-to-date on all things Disney (and beyond). Brigante always seems to be on the cutting edge of news, and is the main source upon which I rely for my Disney scoop! The show often features interviews with prominent figures from an assortment of Disney's various departments, from Imagineering to Marketing to Talent (check out this summer's interviews with Pat Carroll [voice of Ursula] and Jim Cummings [voice of your childhood]), and since Brigante resides in central Florida, he is able to provide exceptional coverage on in-park happenings and events (Check out this clip from the most recent Long Lost Friends week at WDW... it was about time someone held that Shadowman accountable for his actions!).  Inside the Magic is also a helpful resource for those whose interests may wander beyond the Disney parks to other Orlando-area attractions; ITM also provides extensive coverage on developments at SeaWorld and Universal Studios (Hollywood and Orlando)!
The Inside the Magic Podcast can be found on iTunes, insidethemagic.net, or the ITM YouTube channel!

2) Radio Harambe, www.jamboeveryone.com

Let me begin by saying this: this podcast is for you
  •  You're an avid Animal Kingdom fan? You'll love it!
  •  You're not in love with DAK, but you'll spend a few hours there? Yep, you too!
  •  You avoid that glorified zoo like the plague? Especially you!
Radio Harambe (as you've probably ascertained) is a podcast devoted entirely to Walt Disney World's (unfairly) designated "Half-Day Park", Disney's Animal Kingdom. I first stumbled across this fairly new show while traversing the Twitterverse, and, though I wasn't exactly what you'd call an Animal Kingdom fanatic, my interest was sufficiently piqued. Needless to say, it only took one episode to get me positively, absolutely, and unabashedly hooked. David McBride and Safari Mike are engaging and fun as they fill their DAK-loving listeners on the latest scoops around the Animal Kingdom and its corresponding resort (which I am now dying to visit). The two fearless leaders truly love the park and excitedly share everything it has to offer, highlighting hidden gems and shedding new light on the things that are often overlooked by the average tourist. To top it off, Radio Harambe and jamboeveryone.com actively promote wildlife preservation by contributing  a portion of the Jambo Everyone shop's proceeds to conservation funds (and I bet all of those animals are saying a big "Asante Sana"!).
Radio Harambe may broadcast from "high above the savannah", but you can listen to it on iTunes, PodBean, and Stitcher!

3) Resort Loop, www.resortloop.com

I actually discovered Resort Loop (whose name cannot be described as anything but epic) in the early days of Princesses and Pixie Dust, as I was just branching out into the realm of social media (a.k.a. Twitter). Bob Coller, one half of the dynamic duo who host the show, reached out and suggested I check out this podcast... and boy, am I glad I did! Bob and Tim (the other half!) discuss all things Disney- seriously, from parks to cruise lines (and even Disney Theatrical), they're on it! However, even more impressive than the podcast itself (which, I reiterate, is pretty gosh-darn awesome), is Bob and Tim's relationship with their "Loopers" (the title they've bestowed upon the show's listeners); both hosts are active on Twitter and are intentional about connecting with the podcast's fan base, which makes no small impression.
You can hop on the Resort Loop on ResortLoop.com and iTunes!

Which Disney podcasts make your list? Did I miss yours? These three are only the tip of the iceberg... it may not be long until "Part Two" comes along!

Have a magical day!

Snapshot Sunday: Epcot's Canada

Hey there, princes and princesses!

You may have noticed that things have been a little dead in the Pixie Dust kingdom lately.... and I truly am so sorry about it! I've already ranted and rambled enough about my reasons (*cough*excuses*cough) for the lack of posting, so I'll spare you the details to simply say that Princesses and Pixie Dust went on a mini-vacation this week! It was nice, it was relaxing, but I definitely missed writing and connecting with you guys, so now I'm back and ready to roll! (We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.)

This past week, Disney homesickness hit me- oh, it hit me hard. Like, full-on belting "There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" in the shower hard. It was an ailment that could only be cured by full-on immersion into all things WDW. I'm talkin' area music loops, Disneybounding, and, most of all, hours-long expeditions into the vortex of my Disney Parks photo folders.

And, what do you know- that last one gave me an idea! My hard drive is chock full of snapshots that I'd LOVE to share with you guys, but haven't yet had occasion to... that is, until now! Every Sunday here on Princesses and Pixie Dust, I'll be sharing an image (or two) from my pile o' pictures! This week's photo, taken a little less than a month ago, comes to you from the beautiful gardens of Epcot's Canada Pavilion. Canada is one of the World Showcase Pavilions that I haven't had much of a chance to explore, but it's just so darn pretty! One of these days, I'll make a point of spending extra time there, but for now, I'm content to revel in the loveliness of the gardens, the totem poles, and the facade of Le Celier (goodness knows I won't be seeing the inside for a while!).

If that little cottage isn't the cutest thing...

I love the quaint quality of the gardens- and that little foot bridge is too adorable!

Are you guys interested in seeing any more "Snapshot Sunday"s? I'm really looking forward to sharing my memories with you!

Tiana v. Tigger: Taking a Chill Pill

There are a few kinds of people in this world.

First, you've got your Tianas, Rabbits, and Princess Attas- y'know, the determined, diligent, and occasionally frazzled folks who just keep running and running until they hit empty... then keep on trucking! Typically on a mission of no small importance, these guys always have their eyes on the prize; whether it's a restaurant, a bumper crop of carrots, or the safety of an entire ant colony, none of these busy bees will stop 'til she (or he) gets it! They know what's important, and they do it.

Unfortunately, all of those admirable traits can bring some rough consequences. You see, the Zazus of the world can sometimes have a teeny little problem with balance... basically, they could afford to take a chill pill. (I say this in love, guys; Tiana and I are soul sisters.)

Luckily, there's another group in the Disney-verse that can help with that problem! Every Tiana has a Naveen, and every Rabbit, a Tigger. Though the jokesters and wise-guys of Disney sometimes get a bad rap, their happy-go-lucky attitudes can bring the balance that Mouse's workaholics need every once in a while. After all, working hard means playing hard, and since the busiest time of the year is just around the corner (yes, I am already pumped for the holidays and no, I don't have even a little bit of shame), what could be more apropos than some of Disney's most carefree characters stopping by to offer a few tips?

1) Winnie the Pooh
He's cute, he's cuddly, and this "bear of little brain" doesn't sweat the small stuff... well, except heffalumps and woozles! (But can you blame him? Those suckers are quick and slick and insincere!) This silly old bear doesn't need much to be content; as long as he has his Hundred Acre crew and a small smackerel of honey, he's a hefty, happy, Pooh!

2) Timon & Pumbaa
Two words: Hakuna Matata. It's their motto! ("What's a motto?" "I dunno, what's a motto with you?!") That problem-free philosophy (aside from being terrifically catchy) is home to a pretty significant nugget of truth: you can't change the past... so don't worry about it! Well, unless you're running from your past... 'cause I hear that can get dicey.

3) Br'er Rabbit
Br'er Rabbit's lack of discipline may get him into a trouble every once in a while, but he does what he likes, and that suits him! He doesn't pay any mind to that pesky Br'er Fox, and he certainly doesn't let him stop his fun (though he probably should)!

4) Peter Pan
I will give ten dollars to anyone who hasn't wanted to fly away to Neverland with Peter*. Why? Because, beside the fact that adulthood isn't always ice cream for breakfast and no bedtime, the boy who never grows up knows how to go adventuring! He'll hop from the Skull Rock to Mermaid Lagoon without a second thought, then cross blades with Captain Hook... just for fun! He is emboldened by his perpetual childhood, not yet burdened with fear or responsibility, and has nothing to do but play! While the rest of us don't have the luxury (or, maybe, curse) of eternal youth, we can still learn from Peter's playfulness (but a trip to Neverland would be nice, too!).

5) Baloo
Guys, I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure Baloo invented chill. That said, his outlook on life is one from which we could all take a page:
"... don't spend your time lookin' around

For something you want that can't be found
When you find out you can live without it
And go along not thinkin' about it
I'll tell you something true:
The bare necessities of life will come to you!"

Are you more of a Tiana or a Tigger? I am most definitely the former... much to the chagrin of my sleep schedule!

Have a magical day!

Disney Therapy... and an Update or Two!

Hey, princes and princesses! How's it going?

It's been a little while since we sat down and had a chat (a sad fact for which I take full responsibility). The past few weeks have seen some big changes here at Princesses and Pixie Dust: making the trek from Florida to my part-time home in North Carolina, getting a real-live fancy-pants domain name (that's right- just look up at that url! Isn't she purty?), and figuring out how to juggle college courses and an on-campus job while ensuring that you, my readers, are still supplied with pixie-dusted pick-me-ups and Disney magic du jour!

Unfortunately, that last one has been getting the better of me. In the studying and errand-running and general busyness of this week, blogging just became another tick on my to-do list, another chore to complete... no fun, right? That situation had to be nipped in the bud (and I mean pronto), so I hopped on to the great gift to humanity that is YouTube to lift my spirits. That treasure trove of Disney gems always brings a smile to my face, whether I stumble upon video footage of a long-lost attraction or fall into the vortex of too-adorable-to-be-real proposals in front of Cinderella Castle (I'm telling you: it's a black hole of rainbows and sunshine and everything happy in the world). While this particular brand of Disney therapy didn't make my other obligations magically melt away, it helped me forget about them for a little while and put me back on the right track!

This particular video may be my number-one cure for the blues, especially when I'm missing my "happy place". I'm pretty sure any Disnerd can identify with little Lily's reaction to her surprise... and she's just cute as a button!

Seriously, guys, I'm crying with her!

How do you find a little bit of peace in the busy times, especially when blogging starts to feel like a chore? Any tips?

As always, love and pixie dust!
- Becca :)
